KISD Chromebook Policy
Overview
The focus of the Chromebook program in the Kaufman Independent School District is to prepare students for their future in a world of digital technology and information.
The primary tool for students in Kaufman ISD is the Chromebook, a web-oriented device that provides the opportunity to connect student learning to all of the resources and information available online, anywhere, at any time.
The individual use of Chromebooks is a way to empower students to learn at their full potential, to communicate and collaborate on analytical thinking and problem-solving, and to prepare them for their next step in life.
Training
Students will be trained on how to use the Chromebook by their teachers. Students are also encouraged to research and learn on their own. Kaufman ISD students can only log into a school-issued Chromebook using their school-issued email and password.
General Rules
The student is responsible for the device at all times, whether on campus or not.
Family members and friends should not have use of the Chromebook. The Chromebook belongs to the student and only the student.
Do not loan devices to other students.
Do not borrow a device from another student.
Do not share passwords and usernames. Chromebooks must have a KISD label on them at all times and this label must not be removed or altered in any way.
Chromebooks must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels. Spot checks for compliance may be done by administrators or teachers at any time.
No food or drink is allowed next to your Chromebook.
Students are responsible for bringing their Chromebook to school completely charged each day.
Precautions
Do not grasp the screen by wrapping your hand around it, your thumbs could shatter the screen.
Do not lean on the top of your Chromebook when it is closed.
Do not place anything on the keyboard as you may forget about it when closing the lid. Doing so might cause damage to your screen.
Never carry your Chromebook around with the screen open.
Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth such as a microfiber cloth. Do not spray any solvents on the screen.
Do not poke the screen with anything that might scratch the screen surface.
Cords, cables, and removable storage devices should be inserted carefully into the Chromebook
At School
The Chromebook is intended for use at school each and every day. Students are responsible for bringing their devices to all classes unless specifically advised not to do so by their teacher. While in class, students are expected to comply with all school rules, policies, and teacher directives when using their devices.
If a student leaves the Chromebook at home, he/she is still accountable and responsible for turning in all coursework completed in the required time frame as if the Chromebook were present. Other district computers may or may not be available for student use. If a student repeatedly leaves the Chromebook at home, they may be subject to disciplinary consequences or lose the privilege of taking the Chromebook home.
Loaner devices may be issued to students when their devices are being repaired. A limited number of loaner devices are available so a loaner cannot be guaranteed.
Chromebook Support Procedures
The campus-designated Helpdesk location will be the first point of contact for issues with the Chromebooks. The personnel there will be able to help with the following type of issues:
Password Issues
User account support
Hardware maintenance and repair
Distribution of loaner Chromebooks
System software updates
Chromebook Repair/ Theft/ Loss
It is the responsibility of the student to notify the campus staff of any issues, regardless of the cause. If a Chromebook is damaged or not working properly the device should be taken to the campus designated Helpdesk location for an evaluation of the equipment. KISD will assess the Chromebook damage and repair or replace the device if the damage is determined to be accidental and within the protection guidelines. Any issue reported will be handled as described below.
Repair
If a Chromebook is damaged (non-intentional) or has been determined to have a factory defect, the device will be repaired or replaced by KISD. While this takes place, a loaner Chromebook will be checked out to the student. The student will be allowed to take this device home. The loaner device is subject to all the same rules as the normal Chromebook issued to the student.
NOTE: There are a limited number of loaner Chromebooks so there is no guarantee that one will be available.
Theft
In the event of theft, vandalism, or other criminal acts, the student/parent/guardian MUST file a report with the local police department and submit a copy of the report to the school. Provided the school has received a copy of the police report, a loaner Chromebook will be checked out to the student. The student will be allowed to take this device home. The loaner device is subject to all the same rules as the normal Chromebook issued to the student.
NOTE: There are a limited number of loaner Chromebooks so there is no guarantee that one will be available.
Intentional Damage & Damage Fees
In order for the district to be able to continue to provide such supportive resources for our students it is essential that these items are used and treated properly. This includes students making sure that they are acting responsibly and taking care of the items to keep them in good working condition. The overall condition of these items are the responsibility of the student.
If a Chromebook or any of its accessories are lost or intentionally damaged, it is the financial responsibility of the student and parent/guardian involved. It will be at the discretion of KISD administration to determine who is at fault.
For this reason, the following fees will be applied in the event of a broken, lost, or inoperable Chromebook, Chromebook case, or Chromebook charger if the damage is determined to have resulted from improper use or negligence per campus technology personnel. These fees, while they do not cover the full cost of the items, will help KISD to be able to continue to provide our students with impactful educational devices in the future.
If Chromebook damage is determined to be intentional, the full cost of the Chromebook will be charged.
Replacement Fees:

Internet Safety
The District utilizes an Internet content filter that is in compliance with the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All Chromebooks, regardless of physical location (in or out of school) and Internet connection, will have Internet activity filtered. Despite the filter, the District cannot guarantee that all controversial or inappropriate materials will be blocked. Parental monitoring of student Chromebook use at home is encouraged.
